A couple of weeks ago we discovered that we are listed at #1 position
for keywords "search engine" and "search engines" on Go.com (Infoseek).
Many people have been asking us how we did this. It is not an easy
task, but below we will provide you with some tips on how to improve
your rankings on Go.com.

2- How to get good placement at Go.com (Infoseek)
A couple of weeks ago we discovered that our site has been listed in
the #1 position at Go.com (formerly known as Infoseek) for the keywords
"search engine" and "search engines." We are really amazed at our top
placement, which beats sites such as Lycos at #3 and many other major
search engine related sites. In addition, we are listed at #2 for
keyword "search" and at #6 for keyword "free."
Many people have been asking us how we were able to do this and are
becoming more interested in our search engine optimization services.
Part of the reason for this success has to do with the support we have
been getting from sites that link to us. Therefore, we are going to
give something back to our readers and all those that have been linking
to us. Below we will give you some tips on how you can get to the top
of Go.com.
I - Get yourself listed in the Go.com Directory. Getting listed in the
directory section of Go.com will boost your rankings. The directory
portion is different than the search engine section, so if you are
listed in the search engine results, this does not mean you are in the
directory portion. Before you send in your listing, make sure that you
have a quality site, meaning that it has to be an "exceptional" site in
the category you are submitting to, per the Go.com requirements.
There are two ways you can add your site to the Go.com directory. The
first way is to send an email to url_review@infoseek.com. Before you
do this you will need to go to:
http://www.go.com/
Look for the directory path your site should be listed in. When you
send an email to them, make sure to include this directory path, as
well as your website title and a brief description for your site.
The second way to add your site to the Go.com directory is by becoming
a Go Guide. A Go Guide is basically an editor for the directory
section, which will allow you to add any site you want. The sites you
add will still need to be approved by 2 other editors, who have more
rights than you. Also, for every site that you add to the directory you
gain some points, and your editorial rights increase as you gain more
points. To sign up as a Go Guide you can go to: http://guides.go.com/
II - Link Popularity is a very important ranking factor at Go.com.
Your goal should be to get as many sites to link to you as possible.

III - Make sure that your keywords appear in your META Tags and at
least once in the page body content.
Follow the above instructions, then wait a few weeks until your site is
indexed and you should have a pretty good ranking.

3- Link Popularity Tips
As mentioned above, Link Popularity is a very important ranking factor
at Go.com, as well as at many other major search engines.
Below are some more tips on how to improve your Link Popularity.
- The search engines must index all the pages that are linking to you
in order to improve your Link Popularity. Every time somebody links to
you, we recommend that you submit that page to the search engines from
our free submission page at:
http://www.submitexpress.com/submit.html
Search engines will eventually crawl all the links on a page or revisit
to index the pages that your link may be on, but this may take months.
If you want to see some results fast, then you should submit the pages
that your links appear on manually.
- Ask similar sites to yours to link to you, or offer them a link
trade.
- Post your site on bulletin boards and Free For All Links (FFA) pages.
We suggest searching for sites that offer bulletin boards or FFA pages
in the category of your site. For example, if you have a music related
site, then you can search for "music bulletin boards." Once you find a
few bulletin boards, post your links there. Note that some bulletin
boards will have a field for URL and automatically link you. Some
others will turn your URL into a link automatically. But, there are
some out there that do not place your URL in a link format. Most
bulletin boards accept HTML formatted entries, so you can place your
link in HTML format.
- You can do a search in AltaVista or Infoseek to see who is currently
linking to you by typing:
link:www.yourdomain.com
In most cases, some of the sites listed in one search engine may not be
listed in others. We recommend that after you find a list of sites that
are linking to you, resend them to all the major search engines through
our free submission.
- If your website provider offers you a referral log file, take
advantage of it and monitor its activity. A referral log file will
track all the clicks from others to your site. This kind of log file
is offered with most premium web hosting services. If you have your own
domain name, you may have this option; if not, ask your web hosting
service about it. Some hosting services will activate this for you
only after you ask them to do so. You want to monitor the activity in
your log files, and if you find some new sites linking to you, submit
them to the search engines as well.
- If your hosting provider does not offer you a referral log file, then
consider installing a statistics counter that will keep track of
referrals as well. A very good free counter is offered at:
http://www.thecounter.com/
This one will keep track of the last 10 referrals to your site.
- Use our 800+ search engine submission service to submit to over
1,500 search engines, directories and FFA pages. You will receive a
report from us with a listing of all the places you were submitted to.
You can submit the pages that your listing appears on to some of the
major search engines to improve your link popularity. You can order

This is a very time consuming process, but no one said achieving a high
ranking was easy. It requires a lot of time to do all this, but once
you achieve a high ranking, it may be well worth the time.
Please note that Link Popularity is not the only thing the search
engines will look at. There are other factors, but Link Popularity
seems to be a deciding factor in some of the major search engines.

4- Search Engine News
Go.com has stated that they are now taking anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks
to index pages. They have removed the statement at the submission
result page referring to a 2-3 day turn around time.
Go.com has also stated that it is only accepting root domain
submissions now; however, they are making exceptions for free hosted
sites. For example, if you submit your site at:
www.yourdomain.com/page1.html
only your root URL will be listed, such as:
www.yourdomain.com/
But if you are being hosted by a free hosting provider such as
Geocities, or are being hosted by a web provider such as AOL, then
their submission script will know this and include you.
Go.com has promised that, because of this, they will crawl sites and
follow the links on your page for indexing more often.
