2- A New Trend: Free Service Providers Converting to Fee Based
Many free service providers have been starting to charge fees for their
services. These include search engines charging for listing, free email
list server providers, and free hosting providers. It seems that this
is the new trend to survive on the Internet. Many free service
providers are realizing that the free service method does not always
work and they must charge a fee to survive and cover their overhead.
Part of the reason behind why this is happening is most likely a
decline in advertising revenue generated from sponsorships and banner
ads.
On June 25th, ListBot announced that they would be shutting down their
free service. ListBot is a free email list server provider, which was
purchased by Microsoft a few years ago.
Microsoft is giving its customers 6-weeks to get out or shell out a fee
of $149.00 and migrate to a new system. Either way, it is a very big
inconvenience for the current Listbot users. Moving the list over to a
new provider will be a time consuming and costly process for many. In
addition, there are reports that the new option provided by Microsoft
is very buggy and some people have even lost their data in the
transfer. For more on this story please visit:
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/ap/20010624/tc/listbot_shutdown_3.html
Just recently, free home page provider "Homestead" sent an email to its
members informing them of their plans to charge for their services and
asking their members for input on what they would be willing to pay.
According to the results, most people said they would pay $5/month for
the service. Homestead decided to charge much less: $2.50 a month or
$29.95/year. Homestead is giving its members about 90 days to upgrade
or leave. For more details, you can see their FAQ page:

If you are a long-time Submit Express Newsletter subscriber, then you
have probably read our news stories about search engines going on fee
based submission or pay-per-click programs. Just last week, AltaVista
launched a fee based express submission program and LookSmart launched
a pay-per-click inclusion program. For more on these please read the
separate stories included below. Other search engines that are
charging for listings or express inclusion include: Yahoo, LookSmart
(Which powers MSN Search), Inktomi (which powers HotBot, iWon.com and
secondary results on MSN, LookSmart, AOL Search, GOTO and many others).
Two other search engines, Go.com and NBCi (Formerly Snap), that had
launched fee based inclusion programs have shut down recently. Excite
and Fast Search (alltheweb.com, which provides some results to Lycos)
have also announced plans for an express pay for inclusion program.
For more on the subject of search engines and pay-for-inclusion, please

3- AltaVista Launches Fee Based Express Submission Program
Rumors had been going on for months about an express fee based program
at AltaVista. It was finally launched about a week ago.
The new submission program will insure a quick index of your site
within one week and a re-index of your site once a week for 6 months.
The program will also guarantee inclusion of your site, unless it does
not comply with AltaVista rules. However, the benefit of this program
as we see it is that at least there would be customer support, where
you can find out exactly what the problem is if your site does not get
registered.
The program however looks very costly compared to that offered by
Inktomi. The fees for 6 months are as follows:
Unit Price (USD)
1st URL $39.00
URLs #2-10 $24.00 each
URLs #11-100 $19.00 each
URLs #101-500 $12.00 each
Pricing Example:
3 URLs would cost $87 = (1 x $39) + (2 x $24)
In comparison, Inktomi (which powers HotBot and many other search
engines charges $30 for first URL and $15 for each additional URL for
one year.
Up to 500 URL's can be added with each account and URL replacement is
possible if you email them. AltaVista has chosen a third party company
to run this program. The company, located in Silicon Valley, is called
InfoSpider.com.
InfoSpider also offers live chat for customer support during business
hours. We took advantage of this feature and asked them some questions
about the service. We asked them if the submitted pages would be
reviewed by people rather than spiders. Their response was that all
pages would be checked by a spider to see if they are live, while some
pages will be checked randomly by a human editor.
We were also told that it would take 5-14 days for the site to be added
to AltaVista index, even tough the site will be spidered within a week.
To be clear, AltaVista will guarantee to send a spider to your site to
index it within one week. All indexed sites are then added to AltaVista
database once a week. Therefore, it may take up to two weeks before you
are added.
The free submission at AltaVista still exists. However, because of the
addition of the fee-based service, it will now take 1-2 months for the
free submitted pages to show up.
Keep in mind that using the fee-based program does not guarantee that
you will get high rankings. It just guarantees that you will get
entered into their database. AltaVista will use the same ranking
algorithm for both paid and free listings.
We decided to give a test drive to this new submission and submitted
two pages via the program. We ran into a small glitch and one of the
pages never showed up in the account. After, we emailed their customer
support, we received a reply the next day saying they had added our
page. Our advice would be that if submit a large number of pages, make
sure to check back in the account to see if they have all been added.
We are still waiting for the two pages to show up, as it has only been
4 days since we submitted. We will keep you updated on the progress in
the next issue of our newsletter.

4- LookSmart Launches Pay-per-click Sponsorship Program
LookSmart launched a new service called LookListings. LookListings is a
pay-per-click program similar to that offered by GOTO, but with some
slight differences. The LookListings will feature listings in a
sponsored section before regular listings. Advertisers will be able to
buy a number of keywords on a set price determined by LookSmart.
Advertisers will only pay on a per-click basis. The listings will last
for one month and will have a monthly minimum requirement of
$1000.00/month. Advertisers will also be able to list more than 5 URL's
per site, which was the previous limit with the Express submission
program.
LookSmart has just added an information page that doesn't really say
much, but gives an option to fill out a request form so a
representative can call you:
http://submit.looksmart.com/list.jhtml
Keep in mind that LookSmart powers the search directories of leading
portals on the web and more than 380 ISPs, including: MSN Search,
Excite, AltaVista, iWon.com and CNN.com.
It is more important than ever to get a listing in LookSmart. Click
below to submit your site now and have it listed within 48 hours:

5- NBCi Finally Out
As we announced previously, NBCi has finally shut down its search
engine. Any searches done in NBCi will now return results from GOTO. Do
you see something familiar? The same thing happened to Go.com when they
shutdown. GOTO is becoming more and more important as now it provides
listings to most major search engines, such as AltaVista, AOL Search,
DirectHit, Netscape Search, etc It is now a guessing game. Who could
be next to offer GOTO results? Who knows it could be Yahoo!
If you are still not a GOTO advertiser, we highly recommend signing up.
You can receive a $5 bonus in your account when you sign up from the
link below:
