2- Search Engine Optimization Tips

We have been publishing this newsletter to provide our readers with the
latest search engine placement tips and techniques.  For those who want
to improve their own rankings, it is essential to go back and read every
single issue of our past newsletters at:

The important thing to know is that search engines all work differently,
and they all have different algorithms for ranking pages. What may work
on one search engine may or may not work in others.  However, most
search engines generally work the same way and use similar methods to
rank pages. Below are some general ranking factors that most search
engines use:

- Title Tag: One of the most important ranking factors in most search
engines is the Title Tag. The Title tag appears on the bar on top of the
browser and is the headline for your listing in the major search
engines. Do a search in AltaVista for any keyword and you will find that
almost all results in the top 10 have this keyword in their Title Tags.
We recommend including your most important keywords in the title tag of
your site. We also recommend making your title about 5-10 words long.

- Meta Tags: Contrary to popular belief, Meta Tags are not the secret to
getting your sites ranked higher.  Only a few search engines will even
look at Meta Tags anymore, and even then Meta Tags are not the only
ranking factor. We have seen many sites get on top of the search results
without Meta Tags.  However, we still recommend that you use Meta Tags.

For your description Meta tag, you should use maximum of 255 characters
or about 2-3 sentences and include some of your keywords in there. Also,
try to make this as catchy as you can. This is what will be displayed in
the search engines.

For your keyword Meta Tags, we recommend using around 30 keywords at
most. We recommend using a few 2-3 term keywords in the keyword Meta Tag
section. Single term keywords are very competitive and less descriptive,
which will not result in more traffic or higher ranking.  However, do
not in any way repeat any of your keywords, and if they are in a
combination of other words, do not repeat the same word more than 3
times.

Additionally, your webpage editor should have an option to include Meta
Tags.

- Page Body Content: We recommend using a minimum of 100 words on your
page content and using your keywords 2-6 times for every 100 words.  Use
your most important keywords toward the top of your page in the first
few sentences.  We recommend using some keywords in links and large
texts or <h1> Heading Text. Include keywords in the image ALT tags and
in a COMMENT tag. Keywords used in these areas will improve your site's
ranking for those keywords in some search engines.

- Link Popularity: Many top search engines now use this ranking
algorithm, including AltaVista, Excite, Go.com, Google and Inktomi based
search engines. The more people linking to you, the higher your points
you will get. We have discussed link popularity many times in the past

- Click Popularity: Some top search engines use this, including
DirectHit (which powers Lycos and HotBot) and Snap.  The idea is that
the more people clicking on your listing in the search results, the more
points you will get toward ranking higher. However, you cannot simply
click on your own listing hundreds of times hoping that your ranking
will improve.  Search engines can detect this, based on your IP address
you have logged in from, and will not improve your ranking.

- Term Vector: We mentioned this ranking factor in our April 17, 2000
issue and that AltaVista was going to use this.  Excite also uses a
variation of this algorithm.  The idea is that your main page and all
your sub-pages will be indexed to determine a main category or keyword
for your site.  This is also known as a "Theme".  It may be determined
that your site may have one or more Themes. Once your site's Themes or
Term Vectors have been determined, your ranking for related keywords may
improve.  It is important to stay away from unrelated keywords to your
site on your page content, because you don't want the search engine to
categorize your site under the wrong Term Vector.  Many sites that have
sub-pages covering various topics may not do too good.

We mentioned in the April 17 issue that we were going to give you more
info about Term Vectors whenever we find out more.  One of our readers
sent us the link below for an article written by AltaVista, Google and
Compaq staff that goes into technical details how Term Vectors work.
Again, this is a very technical article, so I would recommend that you
skip reading it if you are a beginner.

As you can see, it is not easy to optimize your site for all search
engines and it is a lot of hard work. Since all search engines use
different variations of the above ranking factors, we recommend creating
"doorway" pages for your site. Doorway pages are pages that will have a
similar look to your main page, or they may just be simple entry pages
to your main page. On each doorway page, we recommend using different
Title, Meta Tags and page content to cover different possible ranking
algorithm variations.  However, we do not recommend abusing this, as too
many doorway pages may be considered spam and result in a loss of your
listing or rankings. We recommend creating about 10-15 doorway pages at
most.

Also, some search engines such as Excite have limit of how many pages
they will accept. Excite has a 25 page limit per domain.

When optimizing for the search engines, it is very important to know the
rules for each search engine, because many things you do can be
considered spamming and may actually result in a loss of your listing or
ranking.  In our June 1999 issue, we wrote an article about some common

3- Search Engine News

Excite:

Excite has changed the look of its search results and has done a major
upgrade recently.  They have updated their ranking algorithms. The Link
Popularity algorithm will now also look at the quality of the links to
your site - meaning, if a site that is linking to you is itself more
popular in terms of link popularity, then that has a higher weight than
just any link. As mentioned above, Excite now uses Term Vectors as a
ranking factor. Excite gives a hint at this on their site at a page
titled "Improve Your Site's Ranking":

Excite does not use the Meta Keyword Tag, but it does use Meta
Description Tag to pick up your site description for its listings.

Excite uses LookSmart for its category listings. You will see a link
called "Category Search" on the top and bottom of the results pages that
will take you to the directory listings.


MSN Search:

MSN search announced that it is closing its paid links program.  The
paid links appeared on the left bar of the search results page. 
Apparently, these did not generate too much click thru for the
advertisers.  MSN Search is offering a refund to its current clients or
the option to move their balance to GoTo.com.  You can see the details

AltaVista:

AltaVista has upgraded their affiliate program with new features and
higher payments. You can place an AltaVista search box on your site and
earn 6 cents per search.

AltaVista also announced that now it is the second most popular

GoTo.com and Netscape:

Netscape Communications Extends Premier Search Provider Agreement with

LookSmart:

LookSmart has redesigned its website. See details at:

They have also announced that they have ended the test phase for paid
submission program. They will now decide on a final format. For now, we
noticed that the free submissions are back at LookSmart. We recommend
submitting your site to them as soon as possible, just in case they
decide not to accept free submissions anymore.

Lycos:

Lycos has now dropped Inktomi as a search provider completely and uses
FAST Search at www.alltheweb.com instead.


Yahoo and Google:

Yahoo announced that it has completed integration of Google into its
search results. They have also updated the ranking algorithm used in the
Yahoo Directory part.  You can see details at:

Yahoo directory search results now use link popularity technology from
Google to rank pages. So many of the web site ranking results in Yahoo
have changed.

We have also noticed that the search results from Google displayed at
Yahoo show slightly different results than the ones on Google itself. 
We don't know the exact reason for this yet, but it may be that Yahoo
uses a slightly older database or that Yahoo uses a different ranking
algorithm.  We will let you know as soon as we find out more.
