| It's really not needed having a site listed on thousands of search engines and directories because by adding some links to your website, the main engines would automatically pick the URL. |

By doing link building techniques which was a part of SEO, i think the search engine would be the one who will find your site, let the search engine crawl your site as what they said.

Yes, I've also heard about that, 
But, you can just go to the search engine if it's taking too long and submit your site link to make sure they add your website to their search engine.

Our ultimate aim of bringing our website to first 10 ranks in SERP in search engines is to drive quality customers to our company.
Hence it is enough to bring top rankings in primary Search engines such as Google , Bing ,Yahoo etc.
Because every one is sure that all the customers use these search engines for best results.
I don't know what is the purpose of ranking top in 1000 search engines..

No need to get listed on all search engines. The most important is, you are listed on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. You know the process on it? Just keep on doing link building methods.

There's no 1 single method to get indexed. Two good ways of ensuring you are indexed are to submit your site to whois lookup sites, mcafee site watch, quantcast, comcast etc.
Another way is to use sitemaps and submit your sitemaps through Google Webmaster Tools and the equivalent on Bing/Yahoo.
Once you create new, original and engaging content your site will be regularly crawled thus resulting in quicker indexing.
Obviously one last way of getting indexed is through links. Quick and easy ways are to use RSS feeds and then use an RSS submission tool por just submit to feedage and similar services. Also social bookmarking site slike Digg, Mixx, Connotea, Reddit etc will all get your content indexed.
